What is “Lymphedema”?
Lymphedema refers to swelling that generally occurs in one of your arms or legs. Sometimes both arms and both legs swell. It can occur in other parts of the body as well, if lymph nodes have been compromised.
Lymphedema is most commonly caused by the removal of, damage to, or obstruction to your lymph nodes as a part of cancer treatment or surgery. It results from a blockage in your lymphatic system, which is part of your immune system. The blockage prevents lymph fluid from draining well, and the fluid buildup leads to swelling.
There’s no cure for lymphedema. But it can be managed with early diagnosis and diligent care of your affected limb.
True lymphedema is a chronic, progressive disease and affects about 2 million people in the U.S. Its incidence is on the rise due to many lifesaving cancer related treatments.
4 Components of Lymphedema Treatment
- Skin Care and Treatment of any infection including Active Cellulitis
- Exercises that activate the muscle pumping mechanism to help move the fluid
- Manual Lymph Drainage massage to move the fluid to working pathways and healthy lymph nodes
- Compression Bandaging and or Compression garments to help keep the lymphedema down

More Happy Clients of Gordon PT
“I first came in for a discovery visit to determine cause of pain on the left hip. A week later, I pulled a muscle in the lower right back which went into spasms. Luke and Aram were both helpful and flexible in treating first the muscle spasms and then the hip pain. After a month both problems have subsided and I’m able to resume all my regular activities, including yoga, swimming, snow shoeing and skiing.”Babs, 60's
“I came to Gordon PT for elbow tendonitis. When I started, I couldn’t lift a coffee pot or comb my hair. After working with Luke, Aram and KayLynn I have so much more strength and feel so much better. I couldn’t be happier with the progress I’ve made here. The staff is so friendly and inviting. I am always greeted with a smile and great conversation. I would highly recommend these guys to anyone looking for a fun, friendly environment for their PT needs. I am very grateful to have found them!”Michele, Late 40's
